Beyond Work and Career to Successful Retirement
Retirement today is most often not the end, but rather a new beginning.
As a pre-retiree, you have an opportunity for an expanded engagement with life. It will be possible for you to reinvent yourself and create a new life filled with stimulation, excitement, and purpose.
You can be happy at work or in a successful retirement
Today, you can retire gradually, or even un-retire if you choose. Today’s average, healthy adult has good chance of living to be 83 years old, while the average “First Retirement” is taking place at age 57. |
 |
In the US alone, 10,000 people retire every day. The old version of retirement — as the end of your work life, as a time for disengagement, slowing down and full-time leisure — is being replaced by a new, 21st century perspective. This new perspective includes semi-retirement, part-time retirement and career alternatives to out-dated views of traditional retirement.
Some will continue to work full time or part time because they love their jobs and are happy at work or because they simply can’t afford to stop working. The age discrimination of the past will disappear. As future skill shortages emerge
and workplace changes continue unabated, employers are expected to be more willing to recruit and retain older workers because of their skills and work ethic. Some “semi-retired” individuals may start a new business or a new career to explore their entrepreneurial interests. Others may volunteer their services to their communities or choose to spend more time with their grandchildren.
